Burning Brush Studio

The Studio is where classes are held. Tables and easles are available as well as supplies for those starting out. These are included in the class fees.

Joan works with adultss and regularly holds classes. Students are allowed to work in the medium and subject matter of their choice in these 2 hour studio classes.

Classes are held on Tuesday mornings in the studio from ten to noon: both drawing and painting are taught. A great beginners-to-intermediiate course is called: DRAW TO PAINT. During this two-hour weekly class, students are given the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of Fine Art and how to apply them whiile drawing with pencil, ink, charcoal and pastels in this progression. The second  lesson is a "WoW!" one and always a great deal of fun and surprise as the students find how they can truly draw in three dimensions using simple tools: pencil, Q-Tip, and a kneaded eraser.  This is always a great inspiration to try the next step and this energy is needed because the challenges begin as the student learns to use 3 dimensional techniques through the use of tonal qualities of light, medium, and dark applications: balck and white or color.

Once this is on a comfortable level, the student is encouraged to move on toi the next challenge which is out of the comfort zone. That is painting in color. Starting with water color painting the student learns the techniques of applying both wet and dry brush to achieve pleasing results. The student stays in this medium to get used to brush application and then is encouraged to move once again out of the comfort zone into painting with acrylic paint on canvas. After some time in this medium, the student is asked to move on into painting with oils. If the weather allows, the class sometimes meets out in nature for plein aire experiences. The subject matter varies from traditional representation renderings of animals, people, landscapes, into design and free form application.  The main thrust is for the student to develop his or her own 'signature' in producing art and to enjoyy developing from entering the unknown to feeling an accomplished artist.
